Man claims he got a vasectomy because his wife lives in a ‘Red State’

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s repeal of Roe v. Wade, the landmark case that authorized abortion rights in the United States, many states have severely restricted or outright banned abortions.
While some of these new bans have yet to be tested in court, abortion is now banned in as many as 10 states and many more are expected to follow, according to the New York Times. In addition, some Americans are concerned that the Supreme Court will overturn other reproductive health rights of Americans.
Most notably, Clarence Thomas’ concurrence in the recent Supreme Court case indicated that he was ready to “reconsider” many cases related to personal privacy rights, per Politico. One of the cases mentioned in his agreement is Griswold v. Connecticut, a case that established a personal right to purchase and use contraceptives.
If this case is repealed or “revisited,” as Thomas suggested, it could lead to an outright ban on contraception or deference to states to pass their own laws regarding this right.
This has caused a great deal of fear in the red states. As a result, some people are taking dramatic steps to ensure their ability to prevent future pregnancies, such as stocking up on Plan B and undergoing vasectomies.
One such instance recently went viral on TikTok. In a now-viral video, the user (@karahmatanic) is showing a man, who Karah says recently completed a vasectomy, waiting to be recovered.
“When he gets a vasectomy for you because you reside in a red state,” she wrote in the text under the video.
Her video currently has more than 3.8 million views.
Although there is little up-to-date national data on the topic, Bloomberg reported earlier this month that several surveyed clinics offering vasectomies were receiving an increase in calls and appointments.
“In Ohio, where abortions are now prohibited after six weeks into pregnancy, the Cleveland Clinic went from lining up three or four vasectomies a day to 90,” author Sri Taylor wrote. “Des Moines, Iowa, urologist Esgar Guarín said he typically performs 40 to 50 vasectomies a month; last weekend alone 20 men registered. Koushik Shaw of the Austin Urology Institute in Texas said his office received about 70 calls within the hour of the ruling.”
On TikTok, most users were supportive of the move.
“He’s a whole vibe!!” one user wrote.
“Immediately a 10,” another added.
“I love men who truly step up not just talk the talk.” a third wrote.
Others shared their own vasectomy stories.
“Got mine in ’15. Damn good decision,” a TikToker claimed.
While one of the leading comments urged viewers to “remember that being a professional choice does not mean pressuring or forcing your man to get a vasectomy,” there is no indication in the video that Karah pressured her partner to get one.
Perhaps that was the intention of Karah’s family. In a follow-up TikTok, she responds to a comment by pointing to one of her three children, saying she has “two more like them.”
