A Democratic candidate for Ohio attorney general has ignited a firestorm by posting a social media video in which he declares his intention to "kill" President Donald Trump by pursuing the death penalty against him.

Elliot Forhan, who previously served as a state representative, uploaded the video toward the end of January 2026, as first covered here. The timing lined up with a wave of progressive outrage over Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations taking place in cities such as Minneapolis-St. Paul, where federal agents encountered considerable pushback.

Forhan opened his remarks with a deliberately provocative line: "I want to tell you what I mean when I say that I am going to kill Donald Trump." He then tried to recast those words as a legal objective rather than a personal threat.

He went on to describe a process involving a jury conviction, proof beyond a reasonable doubt, evidence brought forward at a trial respecting due process, and ultimately a sentence of capital punishment carried out against the president. After laying out that framework, he circled back to his original phrasing, saying, "That is what I mean when I say I am going to kill Donald Trump."

Notably, Forhan never identified any specific crime, whether one carrying the death penalty or otherwise, that he believes Trump committed.

Conservatives responded almost immediately. Robby Starbuck, a Republican activist from Tennessee, posted on X that people suffering from "TDS" resemble addicts who no longer get satisfaction from calls for impeachment or imprisonment. "Now we have Democrats running on killing the President," Starbuck wrote. "This guy belongs in an insane asylum."

The broader conservative reaction followed a similar tone, with many calling the video reckless and irresponsible. Several commentators pointed out that Trump has already survived more than one assassination attempt throughout his political career, making such rhetoric especially alarming.

It remains unclear whether the video will prompt any kind of formal legal inquiry. Still, for someone campaigning to become Ohio's highest ranking law enforcement official, choosing to begin a video with "I want to kill" the sitting president is, at the very least, a remarkably unconventional campaign strategy.
