Mitch McConnell congratulates Kamala Harris, calls Joe Biden the President-elect

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is now referring to Joe Biden as the president-elect after previously not doing so. This comes shortly after the Electoral College has confirmed Joe Biden as the future president and handing a loss to President Donald Trump.

McConnell referred to the Electoral College moving forward in favor of Joe Biden and made the following statement, saying “our country has officially a president-elect and a vice president-elect. The Electoral College has spoken. So today I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden.”

The House Majority Leader also offered his congratulations to Kamala Harris in her achievement for becoming the first female vice president.

McConnell furthered his comments about Joe Biden, saying that he has “devoted himself to public service for many years” as reported.

Several other political figures have commented on the situation with Joe Biden and President Donald Trump, after McConnell’s comments about Biden. It was Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin who said, “the fact that it took six weeks for my colleagues to recognize reality and stop undermining our Democratic process is sad and disappointing.”

One of Trump’s biggest foes, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, also chimed in which was very expected. Schumer stated that “our Republican colleagues, for the sake of our democracy, for the sake of the peaceful transition of power, should stop the shenanigans, stop the misrepresentations and acknowledge that Joe Biden will be our next president”

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are set to take the White House on January 20, 2021.
