DeSantis says Florida ports are open, offers incentives for businesses

Republican Governor Ron DeSantis says the ports in Florida are open and could help solve the problem with the supply chain issues and logjam of shipping containers waiting to be emptied.

This took place during a press conference in Jacksonville today, amid social media seeing photographs of shipping containers just waiting out at sea.

DeSantis said: “You’ve seen these images of ships docked off the coast of various cities of the United States where there’s a big logjam, that, of course, is impacting what we see on our store shelves, we see more empty shelves than you’re used to seeing.”

Images of ships hanging out in the water off the shores of California circulated the Internet and prompted vast discussions on President Joe Biden’s ability to run the country. Pete Buttigieg also came up numerous times in conversations across Facebook and Twitter, with some people asking where he’s been recently (paternity leave).

Ron DeSantis reminded people that ports in Florida are working 24/7, suggesting that’s how it should be done. He said, “We in Florida have the ability to help alleviate these log jams and help to ameliorate the problems with the supply chain. And part of the reason is because we’ve long been committed to reliable, modern and accessible port facilities. Since I’ve been Governor in 2019 we’ve allocated almost a billion dollars to over 70 Florida seaport projects.”

DeSantis says there are “incentive packages that will make it worth your while to be able to bring your business to our ports” in Florida.

Time will tell if businesses take him up on the offer.
