A new report by New York Times journalist Farnaz Fassihi sheds light on a potentially pivotal detail in Iran’s recent missile strike on a U.S. military base in Qatar. According to Fassihi, Iranian officials provided advance warning of the attack, aiming to avoid American casualties—an indication that the strike was a calculated move to signal strength without triggering a full-scale military confrontation.

Three Iranian officials familiar with the operation described the strike as largely symbolic. They said Iran felt compelled to retaliate but also sought to maintain “exit ramps” for all parties involved, avoiding an escalation.

The officials likened the maneuver to a 2020 incident in which Iran gave prior notice to Iraq before launching ballistic missiles at a U.S. base in response to the assassination of a top Iranian general.

Fassihi also cited journalist Ronen Bergman, who noted that Qatar reported intercepting the missiles with its air defenses and condemned the Iranian strike. The U.S. Defense Department confirmed there were no American casualties at Al Udeid Air Base.
