UPDATE: For the sake of stupid word play, the Taliban is technically not holding the people hostage, they are just not letting the airplanes leave. So the planes aren’t cleared for takeoff. People can leave another way if they want, like magically growing wings or flying around on an Alladin carpet. Maybe some folks have an extra Harry Potter stick they can wave around and fly home with.
I guess Joe Biden’s evacuation plan didn’t get everyone out as expected by the deadline. It was previously reported that there’s still some Americans left in Afghanistan. And now we have several planes reportedly full of people trying to escape, but the Taliban won’t let anyone leave.
There are several planes just waiting to go, but the passengers are waiting nearby as they weren’t on the planes just yet. They’re simply waiting for permission at this point.
CBS News reports there are “American citizens and green card holders” waiting to get on the planes, but the Taliban is basically denying them the permission to board and take off. CBS News got their information from congressional and NGO sources.
Perhaps Joe Biden should have tipped his toe on that Taliban “red line” and demanded that we get everyone out as needed, instead of bending over to touch grass and give in to the Taliban.
Today reported: “As the Taliban continue to tighten its grip in the country, there’s growing concern that the opportunity for those left behind wanting to get out is diminishing. The Taliban is reportedly preventing planes carrying evacuees, including Americans, from leaving Afghanistan.”
Seems like there might be conflicting reports with some saying people are on the planes and some saying the people are waiting nearby to load the planes. Either way, they haven’t left and that’s the big problem.
DC insider Emily Miller claims: “News outlets are totally wrong to report that Taliban took hostages with the 6 planes at mez with Americans. The passengers are inside the airport. The planes have never boarded. The airline doesn’t have a destination document from State.”
Excerpts of an email from the State Department to members of congress viewed by CBS News acknowledged that charter flights are still on the ground at the Mazar-i-Sharif airstrip in northern Afghanistan and have permission to land in Doha “if and when the Taliban agrees to takeoff.”
“The Taliban is basically holding them hostage to get more out of the Americans,” a senior congressional source told CBS News.
So the Taliban wanted America out, and now they won’t let people leave. That certainly makes no logical sense whatsoever. Way to go, logical thinkers over there. You really nailed it.
The group Ascend, an NGO that teaches young women leadership through athletics, told CBS News they have two planes that have been waiting for six days ready to take between 600 and 1200 people — including 19 American citizens and two permanent residents.
CBS News has not been able to corroborate those numbers, but three other sources confirmed there are Americans in the area waiting to evacuate through charter flights.
The fact that they’re sitting there for six days is bad enough. If the Taliban really wants total control, then wouldn’t it make sense for them to let everyone leave who doesn’t want to be there? They would be allowing their resistance to leave and probably have more control after they all left.
The planes are not currently loaded. The passengers are being held nearby, because the Taliban won’t let them into the airport, according to a senior congressional source.
“The U.S. airfield in Qatar that has been standing by, ready to receive, is now beginning to pack up,” Marina LeGree, the group’s executive director, told CBS News. “We hope visibility will add pressure to force a solution. Six days of talks are not encouraging.”
I feel like Donald Trump would have spent one hour on talking and 23 hours on flying people home. I think he would have given them the ultimatum of allowing people to fly out of there, or face a dangerous wrath of military force.
And I do think the Taliban, knowing how powerful the United States is, would probably go along with that.
They can’t rule Afghanistan if they’re being attacked by the United States or other powers.
What is Joe Biden going to do about this?
