Congressman Louis Gohmert tests positive of the Coronavirus after he was supposed to fly to Texas with current U.S. President Donald Trump. The Texas Republican chose not to follow protocol and did not wear masks in his time inside the U.S. Capitol.

Several administration sources confirmed with CBS News that Gohmert tested positive during a pre-screening at the White House. In his interview with NBC affiliate KETK-TV, Gohmert said that he did not exhibit symptoms of Coronavirus. He said, “It’s really ironic because a lot of people have made a big deal of my not wearing a mask a whole lot. But in the last week or two, I have worn a mask more.” He believes that masks may contain germs and viruses, which is then breathed in.

Gohmert will be quarantined for ten days. Gohmert continued, “I don’t know where it came from, but apparently I have it.”

In June, he told CNN that he would not wear a mask as he continues to be tested negative for the virus. However, if he did contract it, he said, “You’ll never see me without a mask.” Members of the Congress, mostly Republicans, also took a no-mask stance when in Capitol.

Gohmert’s diagnosis was deemed “irresponsible behavior” by House Majority Leader Democrat Steny Hoyer.

Before testing positive on Wednesday, Gohmert attended two hearings on Tuesday. One of which included the hearing for Attorney General William Barr. Barr tested negative but is still to be self-monitored and tested regularly, said a Justice Department spokesperson.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy labeled Gohmert as “Congressman COVID,” and only stated to correct himself on Wednesday.

Despite practicing social distancing, several Republicans continue to refuse to wear masks. This caused Committee Chair Jerry Nadler to chastise them, though Gohmert was not one of those he scolded. Nadler said, “I would remind Mr. Jordan, Mr. Biggs, and Mr. Johnson to stop violating the rules of the committee. Stop violating the safety of the members of the committee, to stop holding themselves out as not caring by refusing to wear their masks.”
