President-elect Joe Biden is demanding that President Donald Trump signs the relief bill that has $600 payments going to most Americans. However, President Trump has requested multiple times that Americans receive direct payments of $2,000 instead, more than triple the amount of what Congress wants to send, and almost double the $1,200 sent months ago in the first payment.

Trump also wants to cut the “pork” from the bill which includes sending millions to other countries in foreign aid – as part of the omnibus that was used in negotiations with the relief bill, and not particularly part of the actual bill itself.

Biden has referred to Trump’s refusal to sign the bill as an “abdication of responsibility.”

Biden said in a statement:

It is the day after Christmas, and millions of families don’t know if they’ll be able to make ends meet because of President Donald Trump’s refusal to sign an economic relief bill approved by Congress with an overwhelming and bipartisan majority.

This abdication of responsibility has devastating consequences. Today, about 10 million Americans will lose unemployment insurance benefits. In just a few days, government funding will expire, putting vital services and paychecks for military personnel at risk. In less than a week, a moratorium on evictions expires, putting millions at risk of being forced from their homes over the holidays.

The president vetoed the bill leaving Congress to scramble and figure it out while risking a government shutdown. Many Americans are simply disgusted with Congress and have expressed a hope that Congress should go without their paychecks like many citizens have, and see what it’s actually like to not get paid for weeks or months at a time.

Trump said via Twitter, “It’s called the COVID relief bill, but it has almost nothing to do with COVID. I’m asking Congress to amend this bill and increase the ridiculously low $600 to $2,000 or $4,000 for a couple.”

He also stated on Twitter the following, “I simply want to get our great people $2000, rather than the measly $600 that is now in the bill. Also, stop the billions of dollars in “pork.”
