Many crimes are down, but this one violent crime just keeps going up for NYC's Mayor de Blasio and that's not a good thing.

A report from the NY Post titled "NYC shootings and homicides soared in 2020, crime data shows" speaks of the increase in shooting crimes from 2020, and there's a second piece below that discusses the 2021 stats in comparison.

The NY Post spoke about the surging levels of crimes related to the shootings and homicides from last year and videos like this were released by some major news outlets. This one being from Daily Caller, and it pieced together some snippets from newscasts.

The NY Post article stated:

Shootings and murders skyrocketed in 2020 throughout the Big Apple, the NYPD said as it released year-end crime data late Wednesday.

The number of shootings soared 97% from 777 in 2019 to 1,531 in 2020 and murders jumped by 44% from 319 to 462, according to the NYPD.

The city watched violence cut through all five boroughs in 2020, sometimes taking down innocent victims in crimes that shocked the city, such as the shooting of 1-year-old Davell Gardner, who was killed at a Brooklyn barbecue in July.

The NYPD said it made arrests in about a third — 32% — of the shooting incidents and established probable cause to arrest a suspect in an additional 6% of the cases, according to the release. NYPD detectives cleared 54% of homicides that occurred within calendar 2020, the release states.

“The clearance rate for this violent crime reflects the NYPD’s deep commitment to public service and will only continue to improve over time as investigations progress,” the release states.

Now that it's March of 2021, a whole new year, and 2 months into it with a new president, has anything changed in NYC?

Well, an article published a few weeks ago says most crime is down, but shootings are still UP.

The info comes from NY1 and says:
The NYPD said the city saw reductions in almost every major crime index for the month of January compared to this time last year.

According to crime statistics that the police department released Friday:
  • Murder are down 7.4%
  • Assaults are down 7.6%
  • Rapes are down 21.6%
  • Robberies are down 29%
Overall, the NYPD said crimes are down 21% from January 2020.

However, shooting incidents are up 16.7 % compared to last year, and the department said there were 185 more gun arrests — an increase of 61.5%.

In response to these numbers, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea released a statement saying, in part, "NYPD cops remain undaunted in their vital work – not only driving down crime – but also engaging with our many community partners in order to build trust in every borough, in every neighborhood.”

Being up 16.7% from last year is not a good sign, as 2020 was a big surge in shootings for NYC as well.

What is Mayor de Blasio doing to curb the shootings?

Is there not enough jobs to keep them off the streets?
